Cancer Research - event search design

Problem & challenge

The existing event search platform for Cancer Research’s website was failing and not retrieving correct or relevant search results. This meant our users were having a poor experience and not finding the events or information they were looking for.

I was asked to create a new event search functionality for the Cancer Research website.

Approach & method

  • I worked with the data team and used Hotjar to identify the main issues that users were facing

  • Through using data and research we found that the main ways users wanted to search for an event were by name, location, category or date. I used this to inform the design and ensured these were all searchable options

  • I conducted a card sorting exercise (open and closed) to find out how users grouped different types of events, this informed the categories used in the drop down

  • We conducted competitor analysis to look for consistent design patterns for search bars and search results

  • The team conducted some initial group sketching and we dot voted on the preferred features and designs. I then designed and prototyped the search bar shown

  • I carried out usability testing of the prototype
